Laura Petel
At-Large Board Member
With 35 years of experience in early childhood education, I am seeking the opportunity to serve as a Member-at-Large on the FLAEYC board because I believe strongly in the power of advocacy, professional development, and community engagement to uplift the field. My career has included time as a classroom teacher in kindergarten through second grade, as well as nearly two decades as a preschool director—first leading an established program in financial decline, and later founding a thriving early learning center from the ground up. These leadership experiences have shaped my understanding of the field’s challenges and given me the tools to help create meaningful change.
At Bright Beginnings, I stepped into a leadership role during a time of uncertainty. Through collaborative budgeting, staff support, and strong communication with families, we stabilized and strengthened the program. Later, at Connection Point Early Learning Center, I was hired to create a brand-new program. I hired all 23 staff members, wrote the policies and procedures, and built a culture of care, excellence, and purpose. Leading a team of 23 women required not only strong organizational skills, but a deep belief in the value of early childhood educators—something I carry with me into all my work.
Throughout my career, I have advocated for professional respect, better pay, and access to quality training for those in the trenches. I believe strongly that early educators should be valued not only for their nurturing spirits but for the foundational role they play in child development and school readiness. We must also work harder to ensure families are informed and empowered. Strong early learning begins at home and continues through quality preschool experiences—something every child deserves access to, regardless of zip code.
Pursuing my master’s degree reignited my passion for the field and reminded me of the broader responsibility we hold: to support not just children and families, but the professionals who serve them. Serving on the FLAEYC board would allow me to be a voice for directors, teachers, and the many behind-the-scenes leaders working daily to uphold quality and care in early learning. I am eager to contribute my experience, perspective, and renewed energy to help move our field—and our state—forward.
